As a former buyer, turned rep what is one thing you have learned along that way that you wish you would have known as a buyer? Production. When I was a buyer I had no idea about the lifecycle of production and what goes into it…. the upfront money, timing and deadlines, and dealing with constant unknowns that pop up as you go. I think as a buyer I just saw the sample I bought, and thought BOOM it should show up on time as it is supposed to be, and when I want more I should be able to get it, why is that so hard? After working with manufacturers of clothing, shoes, accessories, etc. I see the risk and money that goes into every step of the process. There are sooo many things that can (and often do) go wrong at every point in producing and shipping a product that to be honest I don’t know how these people stay sane. It is grueling, high risk, stressful and unforgiving aspect of the business, especially these days, and I have such a respect for the people that not only do it, but do it well.

This little cafe is a real find in Seoul’s up and coming area of Itaewon. It’s owner Kwan Joo Park runs a ā€œfair design tradeā€ concept to support young creative start-ups. The square shelf spaces in the cafe are available to anyone to promote what they do, typically local artists, designers and musicians. The numbers on the empty shelves show the price for the space - the number of coffees you need to buy to exhibit there. Given the quality of the coffee this shouldn’t take too long; having lived in London for years Park prides himself in being able to serve the perfect Flat White.

Beaker is a new contemporary multi-brand store that just opened this Thursday in Seoul’s Itaewon area, stocking contemporary US and European brands as well as local designers. Some of the former group, like Helmut Lang, Aspesi, Rag & Bone, and Band of Outsiders are not available anywhere else in Korea. Conceived as a lifestyle environment over two floors, the shop also contains a small cafe and book store. All its interiors are very creatively recycled from old pieces of furniture. A must-see if you are inĀ the area.

Nice!
